An Interview with Ami from Pamper Me, Baby! Designs

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All through May, we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Ami from Pamper Me, Baby! Designs

Custom Diaper Changing Clutch with Attached Waterproof Pad--Over 80 Fabric Options
What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  I was pregnant with my first child, a daughter, and I starting making dresses and jumpers for her before she was born. After she came, I found myself less concerned with her clothing and very disappointed with the quality and functionality of many of the generic baby items I was using. There had to be a better solution to changing diapers in a public place! I was taking my diaper bag into the restroom and being forced to place it on the dirty floor or just searching all through it to find all the things I needed to change her diaper. I needed something that had everything all together and I could just grab and go without needing the entire diaper bag. So after many many prototypes, along came my All-in-One Diaper Clutch! As time went along I found many more issues with baby products, I found solutions for those as well. Most of my products are the answer to a common problem with many big chain store bought baby products. I thrive on organizing and functionality and my products reflect that. And as a bonus, they are cute too!!
How long have you been practicing your art/craft? I learned to sew in high school in 1997 and continued to do small things through the years. But I picked it up again for these more extensive projects in Aug 2009.

What training have you had or are you self-taught? My first training with a sewing machine was with my grandmother as she was an avid sewer. I had more structured training in a Home Economics class in high school. However, many of the techniques I know today have been self-taught over the last few years.
Baby Burp Cloths - Super Absorbent Set of 4 - Seth's Awesome Adventure Argyle, Paisley, Plaid, and Circles
What is your favorite material to craft with? I love working with good old fashioned (and unbelievably cute!) cotton apparel fabric. I have an addiction to fabric and am constantly trying to find a storage solution for the copious amounts that I have in my craft room.

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  Definitely for me it would be finding the time. Up until today (May 31st), I had a full time job, I also have a 2-yr old, and have been taking classes for entrance into a nursing program. It has been challenging to find the right balance. There are definitely many late nights, but it has been well worth it. My mother, Toni, has been a huge help and does most of my cutting and pinning, which helped out more than I can say.

Baby Bibs - Set of 2 READY TO SHIP - Owls and U & Me DotsAny advice for other Etsy sellers?  First and foremost, your product must be very high quality. This is extremely important, so take pride in your work and make it beautiful and durable. Secondly, take the time and take good pics. This is HUGE! Use a neutral background and take good close ups. You don't need a fancy camera, a simple point and shoot will do. Take advantage of natural light and avoid shadows. Thirdly, list, list, list!! And be sure you use all your tags and they are relevant. These are important to getting your items to the top of the search and will eventually translate to sales. Don't give up!! It took me several months to get the sales going.

What do you enjoy doing in your off time? In my free time, I love playing outside and reading with my daughter. I also enjoy going to movies and sporting events with my wonderful and patient husband. We are huge sports fans and love to support the local teams. I also love crafting other things and scrap booking. I am a creator at heart and that is what I love to do in work and play.
Custom Shopping Cart Cover with Attached Bag YOU pick your own fabricsDescribe a typical day in your life... Well my last day of full time work is today, so while I was working a typical day would go something like this: Wake up around 5:45 a.m., get myself and my daughter ready for work and school, drive 1 hr to work, drop my daughter off at daycare, work until around 3:30 p.m., pick my daughter up and make the 1 hr trek home, play with my daughter and spend time with my husband until 6:30p.m., then eat dinner, give a bath to my daughter and put her to bed around 7-7:30. I would then go upstairs to my sewing room and begin on the orders that are on the schedule for that night. I would typically do this about 4 days of the work week and spend about 6-10 hrs each weekend day working on orders if there were many for that week or I had a show to build inventory for. Now that I will no longer be working (at least until I start nursing school full time in the Fall) I hope to spend both more time with my family and a lot more time working on and expanding my craft.

Where can we find your products online? You can find my products for purchase on my Etsy page or at my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Pampermebabydesigns . I also have a website with Fabric Options and Product Information at www.pampermebabydesigns.com . I am also on Pinterest which is linked on my website and Twitter @PamperMeBabyDes
Thank you Ami, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to grant us an interview!

An Interview with Dana from BabyBinkz

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Dana from BabyBinkz

Mini Diaper Cakes - Unique Baby Shower Gift, Centerpiece, Favor jungle, moon, nautical, sun, butterfly, dinosaur

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs? I have always been creative, but never knew I was crafty until I attempted to make a diaper cake for a friend's baby shower. I had such a great time building the cake and selecting the perfect decorations that I was hooked! I made my next diaper cake - bigger & better - for my sister-in-law's baby shower and was asked by several attendees where I bought it. I started researching diaper cakes and realized that I could make different, creative and functional baby gifts in addition to diaper cakes. One new idea sparked another...and I had to try them all! Before I knew it, my dining room was full of finished products without a home, and BabyBinkz was born!

Receiving Blanket Milkshake - Unique Baby Shower Gifts and Favors baby blanket girl boy neutral

What is your favorite material to craft with? I love adding ribbon and appliques to my BabyBinkz products. I think they take handcrafted gifts to the next level and truly make them unique & special –they add the extra something that makes BabyBinkz products different!

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?
It’s a funny milestone, but I bought my first hot glue gun about 14 months ago. I really started making baby gifts as a possible business about a year now – hard to believe it has been a year already!

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  Well, I have a Masters in diaper rolling, and I am working on my Doctorate right now. My thesis paper is on creating sweet treats out of reusable products. But seriously, I am completely self-taught. Is there formal training or certifications for baby gifts? That might be another great business idea…hmmm.

Diaper & Onesie Cupcake Gift Set - Cute Unique Baby Shower Gift girl boy neutralWhat has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  Simply finding the TIME to do it all! Having a full-time job in addition to BabyBinkz really limits what I am able to do as far as promoting an online business. I have found that crafting and creating is really where my heart is, so I make the time where I can. I sleep a lot less, but I love what I do!

Any advice for other Etsy sellers?Have fun, love all of your products, stand by your work, and never sacrifice your quality standards. I never ship a product to a customer that I am not 110% in love with. I would rather remake it until it is perfect than send out a product that I am not proud of. Some call it OCD. Others call it anal retentive. I call it customer service. I will have to ask my shrink what she calls it…

Sleeping Baby Diaper Cake - baby blanket onesie hat socks pacifier baby shower gift cute unique boy girl neutral

What do you enjoy doing in your off time? What is this “off time” that you speak of? A business owner is never off duty.

Describe a typical day in your life... My husband travels for work during the week, so my dogs (Nibblez & Bitzy) and BabyBinkz keep me company while he is gone! I really don’t want to bore you…but since you asked, here is a typical weekday: 5:30 Wake up, think about going to the gym, decide not to go, play with my doggies, check emails, drink coffee & get ready for work 7:00ish – Place any order packages outside for USPS and head to work 12:00ish- Lunch at home; play with my doggies; check BabyBinkz email 6:00ish – Residual work from the day; play with my doggies & it’s BabyBinkz Time! (can be a combination of emails, listings, postings, Facebook, order fulfillment, new product development, product photos, website development, etc.) 12:00ish – Bedtime* this varies depending upon how much residual work / BabyBinkz work there is for the night! REPEAT 4x before the weekend

An Interview with Nan from Bitty Bambino

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Nan from Bitty Bambino - Unique Handmade Baby Gift Sets and Diaper Cakes

Motorcycle Diaper Cake - Diaper Motorcycle - Deluxe Model with Handmade Baby Gift Set

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  Last summer I had a couple of friends who were expecting their first babies. So I decided to make them my diaper creations for their baby showers. My friends were thrilled and everyone at the baby showers just loved my diaper creations!
Right around the time of these baby showers, I was finishing up many many years of schooling and training in my profession and was planning on taking some time off to stay at home with my daughter. Crafting these diaper creations truly awoke my creative beast, who had lain dormant for so many decades buried under dry textbooks and schooling. My mind began bursting with new ideas and I discovered a kind of excitement and innovation that I never knew I had.

Bassinet Diaper Cake - Diaper Bassinet Stroller - Deluxe Model with Handmade Baby Gift Set

What is your favorite material to craft with? Well, I guess you could say my favorite material is diapers! And other baby products, of course. But for my fabric items, I love minky fabric and micro fleece because of their luxurious softness. And recently I've found that I love the look and feel of quilted fabric. So I like quilt batting now too!

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?  Since August 2011.

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  I am self-taught and have had some initial training in sewing from a family member.

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?   The hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business has definitely been the balancing act between Etsy and my family. It's been a learning curve, but now I make it a point to spend quality time with my husband and my daughter no matter how busy I am. And, of course, I also make a point to have my own time to unwind!

Boat Diaper Cake - Rubber Duckie Diaper Boat

Any advice for other Etsy sellers?  Always give your best effort, but know that you are human at the end of the day. "It's far better to live your own path imperfectly, than to live another's perfectly." ~Bhagavad Gita.

What do you enjoy doing in your off time?  In my off time, I like to do relaxing things like soak in a hot bath, do calming yoga stretches, and go for walks. I've also started trying to meditate more. But it's much harder than you'd think! During my meditations I try to clear my mind, but often find that ideas for new creative projects dance around in my thoughts!

Airplane Diaper Cake - Diaper Airplane -Deluxe Model with Handmade Baby Gift Set

Describe a typical day in your life...  After breakfast, I'll typically run errands purchasing supplies for an order. When my two-year-old daughter finally naps in the afternoon (if I'm lucky for an hour!), I'll put the pedal to the metal and slave-drive my sewing machine to churn out bibs and burp cloths. For the rest of the afternoon I'll spend time with her either going on a play date, going to the park or doing a craft together. I love re-purposing things that we would otherwise throw away for toddler crafts, like paper rolls, light bulbs, milk cartons, paper bags, cardboard boxes, etc. Afterwards I clean up around the house and get dinner ready. When my husband comes home from work, we'll eat dinner and put her to bed. And before I put myself to bed, I'll either work on something for Bitty Bambino or spend some time with my husband.

Where can we find your products online?  My main site is on Etsy, but you can also find my products on Ebay.com, Ecrater.com and Bitty Bambino's own website at www.bittybambino.webs.com.

Thank you Nan, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to grant us an interview!

An Interview with Vicky from That's The Cutest Thing

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Vicky from That's The Cutest Thing

Yellow Poncho, Soft Knit Silky, 2 to 3 Year Size (Item 151)

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  I became a doting aunt to three nieces and three nephews in six years. Aunt Vicky had a very busy time of making coming-home-from-the-hospital outfits, security blankets, and afghans during that period of time! I found I really enjoyed the portability of handmade knit and crochet pieces for babies and children, and I had to find an outlet to sell my creations. In 2005 I began to sell at an annual craft show in Virginia. Customers immediately began to ask about placing custom orders, how to find my website, etc. I put off starting a true small business as I wasn't ready for my hobby to turn into a job. Each year I returned, my customers were more insistent and encouraging that I should have a year-round business outlet. I heard about Etsy from one of my customers in 2009, and after giving it a year's thought, I decided to try being a seller.

Pink Crochet Flower Headband with Vintage Pearl Button and Pink Glass Bead Center, 2 Year to Teenager Size (Item 531)

What is your favorite material to craft with?  Baby or fine-gauge yarn, the more colorful, the better. I have much more than I should!

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?
My wonderful grandmother taught me how to crochet and knit around the age of 6-7 years old. Let's just say it's been a long time!

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  In addition to my grandmother's teaching, later in life I had to teach myself to read patterns as I'd not learned before. With that out of my way, I picked up my hook and needles and simply tried new stitches and projects. I learned a lot of new stitch patterns from making blankets for the babies and children in the pediatric intensive care unit where I worked. My renewed hobby took off and I haven't looked back since! When I began crafting with vintage buttons, I did take an introductory jewelry-making class. I'd love to take more advanced classes, but haven't had the time recently.

Hoodie Sweater, Pink Knit Cardigan with Cupcake Buttons, 2 Year Size (Item 417)

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  Staying organized, by far. I can't just jump in and open up a sixth project anymore because it's impossible to keep track of everything all at once. I love creating new items and listing them, but bookkeeping is a drag!

Any advice for other Etsy sellers?  Do your research! I was really thankful that I spent six months learning about Etsy before I opened my shop; it helped me immensely in avoiding common seller mistakes.

What do you enjoy doing in your off time?  Besides my full-time job as a nurse (the job that pays the bills!), most of my free time is channeled into my Etsy shop. Another passion of mine is to volunteer on international medial missions and in a local community low-cost clinic. I also love antique shopping and collecting, traveling, photography, baking, gardening, and watching movies.

Pink Knit Knot Hat with Ribbed Brim, 3 to 9 Month Size (Item 500)

Describe a typical day in your life...  That sounds like an easy question to answer, but for me it's not--I don't think I have a "typical day"! On my days off, I'll get up at 7 AM and spend part of the morning online working on my shop and everything else that goes with it. I try to exercise daily before I get too involved in other projects. I've resisted setting a routine for myself as there always seems to be something that comes up to lay my plans to waste. For example, this morning I awoke to an Etsy convo from a local photographer. She wanted to know if certain photo props were ready for shipment as she had a photo shoot this afternoon, and could she come to pick them up as soon as possible? Needless to say, my morning accelerated from there! Instead of having a daily routine, I've recently started writing out goals for the week on Sundays. I list personal, work, crafting, and business goals to work toward over the course of the week. So far that's helping me organize my time better.

Where can we find your products online?  I currently don't have a website other than Etsy. However, I'd love for you to visit my Facebook page and my Pinterest page ! I approach my Facebook page like a blog, so I'm always posting about my new creations, sampler crafting, business endeavors, and travels. I post fabulous dessert recipes as well!

Thank you Vicky, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to grant us an interview!

An Interview with Kelley from TuToo Cute Tutus

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Kelley Smith from Tutoocute1/ TuToo Cute Tutus

TuToo Cute Tutu - Bohemian Princess - Unique & Handmade

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs? I have always been known as a “Craft Queen” and was once given the nickname, Crafty Kelley. I am very artistic and love to explore new ideas and creations. I finally found a niche that I decided to run with…Custom Handmade Scrap Tutus! It is not just your typical tutu, which gives me the freedom to use my artistic imagination to create an item that is both fun and unique. Not one tutu is exactly the same.

TuToo Cute Tutu - Red, White and Blue - Unique & Handmade

What is your favorite material to craft with? Textured fabrics and Lace

What training have you had or are you self-taught? I taught myself! One day I decided to try making a tutu with some scrap fabric. I thought it could be a cute gift for a friends daughter’s birthday. Everyone loved it and wanted one for their little girl! I knew at that moment that these adorable tutus were going to be a hit! Since then I have added so many unique fabrics, lace, accessories to add to the uniqueness of the product. I am always trying to stir up new ideas and love when I receive requests for custom orders.

TuToo Cute Tutu - Pink Lemonade - Unique & Handmade

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  Sometimes I will get tired of making the same item over and over. I try to avoid making the “same old thing” by adding a new twist…such as a fun new fabric, print or texture. I love to see pictures of little girls wearing my items. They always look SO CUTE, which inspires me to create more!

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  I first started my shop when my youngest daughter (my middle child) was 2 1/2, I was looking for children & baby items that were cute, but also trendy & unique, and I just wasn't able to find that in the stores/ malls. I knew that I could make the things that I wanted & I figured that others were probably looking for the same things too, so I opened my shop.

What training have you had or are you self-taught? My Nanny first taught me how to sew on her sewing machine, which she then handed down to our family & my mother helped me from then.

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  I am a mother of three young children (1 1/2, 5 & 8) so I would have to say finding the balance between working & doing 'mom' things :)

An Interview with Laura from PixiesnPeanuts

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

  Meet Laura from PixiesnPeanuts

Aqua rolled-brim baby hat with boucle trim and pompom, Newborn - 1 year

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  When my twin granddaughters were born in July 2010, I rediscovered how much fun it is to knit for babies and children. I had been knitting mostly adult sweaters until then. It's easier to be creative when children are involved, and of course they look cute in everything! When I realized that people liked the hats I was making, I decided to try Etsy.

What is your favorite material to craft with?   I love to knit with alpaca and merino wool. I am aware, though, of the need for baby clothes to be easy to care for, so I also knit with washable acrylic.

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?
I have been knitting and crocheting for 50 years. I started making granny squares in the schoolyard during recess in 2nd grade, and started knitting soon after that.

Handknit pink fair isle style lace baby jumper

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  I am basically self taught. In the 80s I worked as a knitter for a sweater designer, and perfected my joining techniques while working for her. It was also the first time my work was being sold, so I was much more focused on the details.

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business?  The hardest part of making a business of my knitting is the marketing aspect. As someone who is technically challenged, I am constantly learning how to use the media which comes so naturally to my children!

Any advice for other Etsy sellers? My advice to other sellers is not to give up. It takes time for people to discover your shop, and there are MANY crafters to compete with! Don't be discouraged, and keep trying new things, and keep listing new items. When you do make a sale, be courteous and helpful to your customer, and make sure to ship your work in a timely fashion.

Green Dinosaur Striped Baby Hat

What do you enjoy doing in your off time?  When I am not knitting, I love to try new vegetarian recipes. I also Skype with my granddaughters who live across the country from us. I am constantly sending them new hats and ponchos to model for me, and like to see them on the computer bringing my creations to life.

Child's Hand-knit Pink Crossover Scarf with Daisy Describe a typical day in your life...  A typical day in my life has calmed down quite a bit since my four children have grown. I can now wake up at about 8, check in at Etsy and Facebook over a leisurely cup of coffee, knit a few hours, do some housework, knit some more, make dinner, knit some more....I would have killed for even a portion of this time twenty years ago!!!

Where can we find your products online? My creations can be found on Etsy. I am also an artist at Bliss co-op in Sugarloaf, NY. My Facebook page (under construction) is PixiesnPeanuts.

Thank you Laura, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to grant us an interview!

Newborn Hat, Turquoise Blue Chevron, Organic Cotton Knotted Baby Hat

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  I was inspired by wanting to create something bright, unique and fun while pregnant with my son.

What is your favorite material to craft with?  I love working with organic jersey. It's unbelievably soft.

Owl Baby Blanket, Little Illustrated Owls, Eco Friendly Organic Cotton Baby Blanket, Etsy Kids

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?
I design my own fabrics and have them printed especially for use in my shop. I've been a graphic designer for 6 years, and have been turning that into baby blankets, hats, burp cloths and other gifts for just 7 short months!

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  I learned to sew in the third grade via 4-H. I didn't really fall in love with it until I got pregnant, and the maternal instinct to CREATE kicked in.

Baby Blanket, Pastel Ice Cream Cones, Organic Cotton Baby to Toddler Blanket

What has been the hardest aspect of creating a hobby into a business? My "hobby" got really difficult when I couldn't juggle my regular 9-5 job at Teen Vogue magazine. Financially, we're finally able to make the transition of me doing Little Hip Squeaks full time, and I am SO excited to be able to spend more time with my son.

Any advice for other Etsy sellers?  My advice to other sellers is have something unique that you absolutely love. If you love it, and believe in it, it will show.

Baby Hat, Ice Blue Chevron, Organic Cotton Knotted Baby Hat, Etsy Kids

What do you enjoy doing in your off time?  In my off time, I love to run. Nothing clears your head and recharges you like a nice long run.

Describe a typical day in your life...  In a typical day, I get up and go for a run while my husband gets our son ready for the morning -- my husband works from home as well, so it's really an interesting dynamic. I usually take our little guy out for a walk, or to the park, or to a museum so my husband gets some quiet time to work. Then at nap time, I get to sew and pack up orders. At the end of the day my husband will take my son back out, and I can get a little more work done!

Where can we find your products online?  Little Hip Squeaks

An Interview with Jenny from Madaline Jane

As many of you know, EtsyBABY team members are extremely talented.  We wanted to take a peek at the person behind the creativity.  All throughout May we will be interviewing shop owners, to get a glimpse of the designer behind those adorable baby products!

Meet Jenny from Madaline Jane

3pk Childrens Boxer Briefs, Custom Size 2-6

What inspired you to begin a shop featuring your own designs?  I loved the euro designs I saw online. My middle son was just a baby then and I wanted to sew for him and the two older kids. I loved the tees that weren't like the ones in the stores around here.

What is your favorite material to craft with?
Fabric, of course. I like all types of fabrics. I really like using textiles that are considered hard to sew or tricky. I love a challenge.

What has been the hardest aspect of turning a hobby into a business? Have the time and energy to create. I have five children now and my free time is rather limited. My older kids are all in school now and I only have the two youngest home with me. Next year I will have more time as my 4th child will enter 4 day a week preschool.

How long have you been practicing your art/craft?  Oh gosh, a long time. Not counting the years I spent as a kid sewing, I have been a designer for 6 years.

What training have you had or are you self-taught?  I have taken classes but I'm mostly self-taught.

What do you enjoy doing in your off time?Playing and coaching soccer. It's a great game and one I really enjoy!

Infant Day Baby Gown, Custom

Describe a typical day in your life...  I don't know that I have a typical day. I usually wake up earlier then I'd like with less sleep then I need and get my kids ready for school. I have three in elementary school and they ride the bus. Just getting them off to school can feel something like running a marathon. After that is over I sit down for 5 mins. I then get my dd ready for preschool and the baby dressed. We go off to preschool. I try to fit in some sewing when dd is at school but usually that doesn't happen. Since I have more laundry then you can possibly imagine, I usually end up doing something with that. I then pick up dd from preschool and we go home to have lunch. It's nap time for the baby (or toddler but I refuse to think of him as that even though he's over 18mos). DH comes home and I eat lunch with him. Honestly, some days I think I would skip lunch if he didn't come home. It's probably better for my health that he does. :) I then squeeze in some sewing time. I am a quick seamstress and a process sewer so I enjoy this little time. It helps me to relax and decompress. Time for the bigs to come home from school. I wait for the bus and they get a snack. Then we are off to our evening activities. Dinner is usually late and I mostly distress the ritual of creating it. Not always, but 55% of the time. I prefer to bake things rather then cook. Bed comes for the kids and dh and I try to relax before we go to sleep.
