Travel Tips for the Holidays

Who hasn't seen the movie, Trains, Planes and Automobiles?

It's easy for us to laugh from the sidelines at Steve Martin and John Candy with all of their mishaps and quandaries they foun themselves in, but when it is happening to us it isn't so funny.

We put together some traveling tips for you in hopes you'll be prepared for your holiday trip.

Traveling By Car

Make sure your car is up to date with its maintenance schedule, the tires have been checked, your windshield wipers are functioning and you have a full tank of gas.

Plan your traveling route out and, if need be, plan for an alternate route in case of road closures or bad weather. Remember to have your maps handy.

Check the weather report for conditions you might not have known about.

Have a safety kit in the car that includes a flashlight, blanket, water and tire chains.

Don't overload your car with too much luggage. This can make it difficult for your car to preform properly and to see any traffic on all sides of your car causing you blind spots.

When traveling long periods of time take at least 10 minutes and stop to stretch your legs and have a snack and something to drink.

If you are driving with others have a co-pilot, so he or she can take over and do some of the driving.

If you stop to have a meal, don't over eat. Over eating tends to give you a heavy feeling and the motion of the car can lull you to sleep.

Be aware of your speed. Not only is this a smart driving tip, but it would save you from getting a speeding ticket.

Traveling By Plane

Booking the flight is the first step. Choose a flight that suits you and your family the best. Traveling during the holidays will insure you lots of crowds, so think about taking a flight at a time that isn't so popular. Not only can this save you from traveling with crowds, but your chances of being bumped from your flight lessens. Night travel might be a great time for you to fly with little children. They will sleep during the flight, which relieves the stress from you, from other passengers and from your child as well.

Most airlines allow you to check in the night before through the Internet. I would highly suggest that you to do this. All of the airlines overbook their flights and the last thing you want is to be bumped from your flight.

Think about packing with only a carry-on and a small case that can be stored in the overhead compartment. By not checking luggage you can save yourself some time from having to stand at the carousel with all the other passengers.

If your traveling with someone else and you do decide to check in your luggage think about adding some of your clothing to their luggage and some of theirs to yours. If one of your pieces of luggage gets lost you wont be without all of your essentials.

Arrive at the airport 2 hours a head of time. This will give you enough time to check in, go through security and get to your terminal. This will also give you an opportunity to go to the bathroom.

Do not pack your medications in your luggage. If your luggage gets lost, so will your medication. Put your medications in your purse or carry-on bag. Keep your medication in it's original container, with your name, Drs name and the pharmacy on it. Medication without the original container might get confiscated from security.

Wear shoes that you can take off easily when going through security. This will help you to get through the screening process faster.

Wear something that is comfortable to fly in. I do not mean short shorts, belly shirts or pants with holes in the crotch. That type of clothing is inappropriate, offensive and unsanitary to wear on a plane.

If you are traveling with a senior citizen, handicapped person or children ask to be boarded early to get them situated without the crowd of the remaining passengers.

Tips for inside the plane ride:

Hand sanitizer is great solution instead of having to go to the bathroom to wash your hands with everyone else.

Hand wipes can be used to wipe down the folding tray tables as well as the arms of your plane seat.

Tissue to sneeze in. A open sneeze can jump as far as TEN rows in an airplane.

Bring your own blanket or travel pillow. It is a known fact the airlines don't wash them.

Tips to relive air pressure issues:

Infant/Baby-Nurse or bottle feed them

Toddlers-Sugar free lollipops to suck on

Youngsters and Adults-Gum to chew

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

What is the big deal about an oatmeal raisin cookie recipe?

Normally I would say nothing.

But, it is my nature to cook up to five different versions of one type of recipe.

Having said that, this is the recipe I like best for oatmeal raisin cookies.

It stayed moist and tasty and it was just the right amount of spice and sugar to be considered a really good cookie recipe.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

3/4 cup Butter, softened

3/4 cup Sugar
3/4 cup packed Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
3/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Salt
2 3/4 cup Rolled oats
1 cup Raisins

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and brown sugar until smooth.

Beat in the eggs and vanilla until fluffy.

Stir together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

Gradually beat into the butter mixture.

Stir in the oats and raisins.

Drop by the teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool slightly, remove from the cookie sheet to a wire rack.

Setting the Table to Celebrate

There are a lot of details that go into setting the perfect table for the holidays.

We have gathered some ideas and hope it gets you to thinking about your own home and how you could decorate it on a budget using some thoughtful, interesting items to decorate .

Give your side table an organic earthy feel to it by using pottery with different elements, like tree branches, vegetables, acorns or pine cones.

This is a great look which gives of a homey feel to the dinning room.

Add small candles with leaves and twine wrapped around the outside of the glass for a warm glow.

No candles? Use Christmas lights instead and wrap them around the base of each piece of pottery for the same lighting idea.

Add a colorful table cloth or table runner to the center of the table.

Throw in candles, leaves, cranberries and a simple setting can make a big statement to any table that costs little money to no money at all.

Make sure your candles have a suitable holder to catch any of the wax drippings, so your table cloth or runner don't get ruined.

Once the side table is decorated and you have placed down the table cloth and or runner to the table you are ready to put the places settings down.

Picking just the right place setting is just as important as the decorations.

If you have a colorful table you might want to choose a subdue place setting that compliments it or if you have a solid table cloth I would suggest going with a more bold pattern for the dishes.

Finally, the last step is to set the table with the place settings, silverware and glasses.

We have attached this easy to view guide to help you finish setting your table for your holiday dinner.

We hope the suggestion we have offered give you some ideas to set your table for the holidays and creates a warm space for you and your guest to enjoy the holidays together.

Happy Holidays!

Cooking the Perfect Turkey

"I make the best turkey ever!"

We asked for your best turkey tips and here is what we got!

"Soak your turkey in apple cider for 12 hours before cooking and cook your turkey upside down , so the white meat is nice and juicy, if you don't use a bag. I also like to add apples with the stuffing"
Jen~

"Lift up the skin on the top of your turkey (like you would do with a chicken) and place cold pats of butter under the skin. Making sure the outside of your turkey is dry, rub butter on the outside of the turkey skin, season it well with salt and pepper and cover with aluminum foil. The last hour of the cooking process remove the foil, baste the turkey and let it cook for the remaining hour. Let your turkey rest for 20-30 minutes and you should have a moist, well-cooked turkey."
Sandra~

"For a crisper skin, unwrap the turkey the day before roasting and leave it uncovered in the refrigerator overnight."
Brian~

"Once you get your turkey in the oven let it cook! Every time you open the oven to baste or look at the progress of the turkey you let out the heat and it takes the oven time to regain the heat that was let out from opening the oven."
Romaine~

"Carve your turkey with a very sharp knife or an electric knife."
Rick~

"A turkey cooks better if you don't densely stuff the cavity of the turkey."
Gerri~

"Thawing a turkey is just as important as cooking it right. I usually get a 20-22 pound turkey and it takes about 3 days to fully defrost it in the refrigerator."
Betsy~

Which ones are they?

How can I tell if my child might have food allergies?

What signs can I look for?

Dripping Nose
Itchy Eyes
Rashes and Hives
Nausea
Diarrhea
Labored Breathing

Any one of these symptoms can be related to other issues and not allergies, so with anything consult your child's doctor and let them do a formal diagnoses of your child.

Thanksgiving Wreath

Happy Thanksgiving

Cardboard, cut into a 12" circle
Construction Paper:
Red, Brown, Orange, Yellow & Green
Glue

Ribbon

Cut a piece of cardboard into the shape of a 12" circle.

Fold each construction paper in half and then fold it in half again.

Place your child's hand in the corner of the folded construction paper and trace their hand with a pencil.

Keeping the paper folded, cut the hand print out. Do this for the remaining colors of construction paper.

Starting at the top of the ring, glue the first hand print on the ring putting glue only on the palm of the print, leaving the fingers free.

Changing the color of the hand print as you go, glue the next hand print clockwise from the first hand print. This direction will allow the fingers to stay on top instead of being covered.

Glue or staple a ribbon in place on the back of the wreath. This will allow the wreath to hang from a door or window.

You can have your child add a "Happy Thanksgiving" sign to the wreath or Thanksgiving stickers or any other decoration to spice up the wreath.

This project is easy and you'll be able to find these items already in your house.

Indoor Activities

Imaginative Play

The combination of wet weather and children inside for days at at a time usually creates a lot of pent up energy.

A creative mind and a house full of items can turn an afternoon into an expressive, fun-filled time.

A kitchen ladle, a broom stick, cordless telephone or remote control, bed sheets hung over a rope and some of mom or dads fancy clothes and you have got the workings of a KARAOKE NIGHT CLUB.

Just add some fun music and you are off to a great start.

You might have the next American Idol in the making!

A small tent becomes a BIG ADVENTURE!
Add blankets, pillows, books, a tackle box filled with juice boxes, gold fish and apple slices and your little adventurer is set to go. This is the perfect place to nap too! Don't have a tent? Use blankets draped over two twin beds or the dining room table also makes a great tent-like structure.

How about a MAGIC SHOW?

A cool hat, cards, magic wand, a colorful scarf, a bow tie, a small stool and a table cloth or towel draped over it and you
have the makings of the perfect magic show.

Let your little magician entertain you!

A big stack of cards, any cards, makes the perfect time to practice eye hand coordination and build the perfect HOUSE OF CARDS.

You may have to give your little one some help on this one, but I am sure it will only make it even more fun for your child.
No cards? Use blocks.
